1. Congratulations to Nicole for her In the News presentation on the new distracted driving law in Ontario. We had a great discussion about the use of cell phones in cars and we thought it might be a good idea to find out about the distracted driving laws in Alberta. You are welcome to inquire about this and report back to the class what information you find. Maybe we can invite our school constable to our classroom to learn more about traffic safety.
2. Please bring in canned or packaged food items for our Veterans' Food Drive. Today some students went with Mrs. Gordon to use hula hoop venn diagrams to sort and organize food already collected.
3. Field trip forms went home today. We are off to the Glenbow Museum on Thursday, November 16 to take part in two different programs: Comparing Cultures and Landers and Builders. Please sign and return forms with payment as soon as possible.
4. We are preparing for our Remembrance Day assembly by rehearsing our drama production of the poem Please Wear a Poppy. Please practice reading the poem at home. It is posted in last week's agenda items. If you would like to be one of the actors, practice possible actions and speaking with strong expression. Parents are welcome to attend the assembly which takes place on Friday morning, November 10 at 11:00.
As part of the assembly we are asking students to share stories about relatives or friends who were or are serving in any war or peacekeeping efforts. We also discussed that stories about those of us who are helping the war against poverty or hunger would also be welcome. Pictures and information regarding what they did/are doing and where they were/are stationed will be necessary. Pictures can be scanned/ sent digitally!
FYI! Here is the stanza from our poem that was accidentally missed out from our original. It comes after the third stanza.
"He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile,
But he'd seemed with us such a little while
When war broke out and he went away.
I still remember his face that day
When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye,
I'll be back soon, Mom, so please don't cry."
5. Math tests were returned today. We will discuss and review the test tomorrow.
6. We are almost ready to present and share our Buddy Bench designs. To bring this project to fruition, we may need some support from parents in terms of providing scrap lumber, or assisting with the design and building process. Please email me ([email protected]) if you would like to support this project.
7. We had a great discussion about how our families arrived in Calgary and why we choose to live here. If you haven't yet, please have this conversation at home. Take notes if you'd like. Make sure you can share your 'story" tomorrow.
